Natural acid rock drainage in alpine catchments: A side effect of climate warming

چکیده
A historical series of aerial photographs spanning more than 70 years (1945–2018) revealed that natural acid rock drainage (ARD) has experienced an intensification in the Noguera de Vallferrera alpine catchment (Central Pyrenees) due to climate change during last decade. ARD manifests by precipitation whitish aluminum-compounds strikingly cover beds some gullies and streams high-mountain catchments. The total length affected increased from ca. 5 km (1945) 35 (2018). Up 68 water samples were collected three main areas determine spatial variation acidity concentration dissolved metals, representative surface subsurface waters. Concentration aluminum clearly correlates with Aluminum occurs where acidic waters, enriched metals related oxidation sulfides, mix non-acidic In addition aluminum, other potentially toxic trace are present at concentrations well above quality standards for Here, we show warming severe droughts recorded decade most plausible causes observed intensification. This result is supported a good correlation between regional ascending rate periglacial limits (ca. 46 m-height/decade) rising maximum elevations which 45 55 m-height/decade). climatic control, also local geomorphology playing major role. distribution deposits (rock glaciers, protalus ramparts, cones talus slopes) deep-seated gravitational slope deformations exert strong control on patterns hydrodynamics ARD. better understanding phenomenon monitoring its evolution can provide clues these side effects warming, here many catchments worldwide.

متن کاملRock glaciers in crystalline catchments: Hidden permafrost‐related threats to alpine headwater lakes
A global warming-induced transition from glacial to periglacial processes has been identified in mountainous regions around the world. Degrading permafrost in pristine periglacial environments can produce acid rock drainage (ARD) and cause severe ecological damage in areas underlain by sulfide-bearing bedrock. Limnological and paleolimnological approaches were used to assess and compare ARDs ge...

Research was carried out to improve acid rock drainage (ARD) prediction methodologies, focussing on resolving uncertainties in acid base accounting (ABA) methods. Advancements, their application, and interpretation are reported. Consideration of both net acid production potential (NAPP) and net acid generation (NAG) test results provide a more reliable routine screening technique than either te...
متن کاملInverse distributed hydrological modelling of alpine catchments
Even in physically based distributed hydrological models, various remaining parameters must be estimated for each sub-catchment. This can involve tremendous effort, especially when the number of sub-catchments is large and the applied hydrological model is computationally expensive. Automatic parameter estimation tools can significantly facilitate the calibration process. Hence, we combined the...
متن کاملMulti-Output Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System for Prediction of Dissolved Metal Levels in Acid Rock Drainage: a Case Study
Pyrite oxidation, Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) generation, and associated release and transport of toxic metals are a major environmental concern for the mining industry. Estimation of the metal loading in ARD is a major task in developing an appropriate remediation strategy. In this study, an expert system, the Multi-Output Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (MANFIS), was used for estimation of...
